Phlebotomist Certification – what are the benefits? by Erie Capipe
As health care costs rise, doctors and nurses increasingly find themselves overloaded with work. Hiring extra nurses to fill the void is an expensive solution, so the Health care Industry gave birth to the Phlebotomist. A Phlebotomist exclusively handles the drawing of blood, tagging the blood samples, thereby relieving the doctors and nurses of this extra task.
This skill was usually learned while on the job, however as health care advanced; the phlebotomist became a full time and valid member of the hospital staff. In order to qualify as a phlebotomist you must perfect all aspects of venipuncture, or simply the act of drawing blood, in a very gentle and caring way – patient centric.
Certification Benefits
The USA has varied requirements per state. A high school diploma is the “floor” requirement in terms of education , and at least a six-week phlebotomist certification class. Although not all states require a phlebotomy certification, having one almost guarantees higher pay and gainful employment in good hospitals and health care institutions.
Phlebotomy Training
American Medical Technologists (AMT), the American Credentialing Agency (ACA), the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), and the National Health career Association (NHA) aere just a few institutions that offer certification in phlebotomy, In California it is a must that you have a certificate in phlebotomy, it is state approved training and you must pass the exam.

A great way to get yourself certified (especially if you’re a working mom, or a stay at home parent) is to get your certification online. The classes happen online and require you to be in front of your computer at a certain time.” Dry exercises”(such as venipuncture on dummy arms) are conducted at a specified clinic or school. You have to be present for the exercise as this is the key skill set you need to get certified.

In the Uk phlebotomist salaries run at 7-10 sterling up to 25 sterling an hour. Canada pays around $14-20 Canadian dollars an hour. The US pays its phlebotomists $26.97/hour
