What makes a Great Pair of Denims

A decade ago, denim lovers would joke that their jeans were just getting good when they fell apart. Denim designers cleverly seized the opportunity, and made them good from the ‘get go’ by applying various washing and finishing techniques. This took the edge of the traditional saturated denim blue, and – all importantly – softened the fabric. In fact, while we might think of silk as a luxury fabric, soft, worn denim is no less luxurious. The denim feel, and comfort, is unique. And, not surprisingly, perhaps, some designers, such as Tommy Hilfigger, have even used denim for bedding.

The two most basic elements of jeans design are the cut and fabric (in the latter case, most especially, which treatments will be used in production). Sandblasting gives new jeans that worn-in look and feel, while whiskering is used to fade ridges and create the look of naturally worn-in creases. And there are plenty of other techniques and washing treatments that can be considered when designing with denim.

When it comes to the cut of a pair of jeans, there are now many options. And most jeans designers will usually produce several cuts, ranging from low-rise (or ‘low rider’) to shorts/capri, and from skinny and boot-cut to wide leg. As denim stretches slightly, and will shrink slightly as well, jeans are usually snug around the hips. Skinny jeans may be snug down to the ankle. But with properly washed and finished denim, jeans should be comfortable, not tight.

One of the most attractive feature of jeans, is their embellishment. Rivets were introduced to the jeans by Levis. While they were meant to prevent rips, the small metal studs, bearing the brand name, have become a feature of some designer’s jeans. The most essential decorative element of any pair of jeans, however, appears on the back pocket. And, denim designers can put as much thought into this detail as they might the rest of the jeans put together. Back pockets are typically decorated in embroidery or stitching, though print and appliqué are also sometimes used. But, more important still, is the concept. Designers usually want to create a motif that plays on the traditional jeans pocket look, that began with Levis. Many designs are witty or clever.

Wax street wear company, for example, created a simple but very effective embroidery design for the back pocket, by stitching a wavy line resembling the heart beat or ‘cardiac cycle’ produced via an electrocardiograph. Apparel company Miss Me has decorated its jeans with a spray of embroidered lines in gold and white that resemble spiders’ webs or fireworks exploding. These are entirely in keeping with the jeans design tradition, and yet are instantly recognizable. Miss Me has also embellished their jeans’ pockets with an appliqué leather star, and cross motif made up of black diamond rhinestones, metal rivets and silver metallic embroidery. As it says on their website, “the back pockets shouts ‘Miss Me Jeans’.” If you want to learn more about jeans, denim washes and treatments, and how to get your brand into the stores, check out www.StartingaClothingLine.com.
